Parties can only be planned to a very small degree. The result of throwing people suddenly together is unpredictable and beautiful (there can sometimes also be tears, but that's OK). The appearance of the paper hat in this context invites the wearer to enter a state of 'otherness' where the usual rules can be temporarily abandoned. This often occurs in an atmosphere of joyous celebration where the sharing of food, conversation and perhaps even moderate degrees of naughtiness can be expected...

On 31 August 2005 we came together at the ABC and put on our paper hats. These are the nine conversations that followed.
