Keith Jarrett's solo piano recitals are very long. Colin Hopkins' solo pieces are succinct. There is one thing in common. Both draw from classical and folk sonorities.

Hopkins' beautiful pieces, though not long, are at one level meditations on the resonances of the piano. Most are his own. The traditional Black Is The Colour is largely a counter melody of his own devising, with echoes of the original and of Paul Grabowsky's Angel. Giant Steps - one of the last Coltrane tunes in which many chords zip by - is slowed right down to extraordinary effect. Golden Earrings, a popular song by Victor Young, is also folk-like, and here Hopkins stays closer to the lovely melody. Hopkins's own Rain is exceptional among many engrossing little essays in sound, harmony and haunting melodic allusions.
